Member of Parliament for Reading West
Alok was elected as Member of Parliament for Reading West in May 2010. Since then, Alok has worked hard for the people of Reading West and fought about issues that matter most to them.
Alok could be described as a local community man. Born in September 7, 1967 Alok grew up in Earley and Whitley ward in Reading. He attended Presentation College (now the Elvian School) in Southcote and Reading Blue Coat School in Sonning. At the young age of 11 Alok became a member of the Conservative party and assisted local Conservative candidates with canvassing on a number of general elections.
Alok received his Bachelor’s degree at Salford University, Greater Manchester in Applied Physics with Electronics in 1988 and subsequently qualified as a chartered accountant. He has extensive work experience, ranging from working on a factory production line, being a company auditor, tutoring university students, and advising companies.
Alok is extremely passionate about supporting small businesses, pensioners and local charities. Alok is currently a governor of a local primary school in Reading and has worked closely with ASAG group to open the first free school in Reading.
Throughout his political life, he has led campaigns on several issues. In 2010, Alok handed in a 2,000 signature petition to Number 10 Downing Street actively supporting the Gurkha community in its quest to fight the threat of being deported from Britain. He has also campaigned against developments such as the controversial Thames Water’s Bath Road reservoir project as well as The Pincents Hill project for 750 homes in Tilehurst.
Alok is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the advancement of the Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce which supports environmental initiatives. He has also served as a chairman for the political think tank Bow Group's economic affairs committee.
Alok is married and lives in Reading Borough with his wife and two young daughters
